It’s official. Katy Perry will headline the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show, the NFL announced Sunday night.
This continues a recent trend in which the NFL looks for younger acts, like Bruno Mars last February. Perry holds some promise; she’s already rocked on a football show this season: ESPN’s “College Gameday.”
In that appearance early last month, Perry addressed earlier reports that the NFL was approaching performers with an offer to put them in the Super Bowl spotlight if they compensated the league in some way. “I’m not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl,” Perry told the “Gameday” crew (while wearing a fabulous pink sweater/jersey/thing).
No word yet what, if anything, she or Pepsi, the halftime show sponsor, will pay. She seemed pretty stoked for the gig, which she acknowledged the announcement during the “Sunday Night Football” game from Australia, where she is on tour
It sounded a little lame until she got to the part about 1,000 kittens on stage.
