Maroon 5 Crashes Real-Life LA-Area Weddings for New Music Video ‘Sugar’

Several couples who tied the knot in Los Angeles in December were treated to a surprise performance from the band Maroon 5, which filmed and featured them in the group’s newly released music video “Sugar.”

“It’s Dec. 16, 2014. We’re going to drive across L.A. and hit every wedding we possibly can,” frontman Adam Levine said at the start of the video that was posted to the band’s YouTube channel Wednesday. “It’s going to be awesome.”

At each wedding reception Maroon 5 visited, the group’s members hid behind a curtain on a stage that was already set up for the wedding band hired to perform, CNN reported.

But as the curtain dropped during the big reveal, unsuspecting wedding attendees learned that one of the most popular bands in the country was playing instead.

Cameras captured the surprised and delighted expressions of the bride, groom and guests the moment they realized it was Maroon 5 on stage. Many walked or ran up to the dance floor, the video showed.

Only the grooms were in on the stunt, the cable news channel reported.

“It was an out of body experience,” Levine told People Magazine, according to CNN. “I had no idea I would be affected by the overwhelming reactions we received from the couples and guests. Being able to create an unforgettable experience for several people was the highlight of it all.”

The video was directed by David Dobkin, the man who was behind the camera in the 2005 blockbuster hit “Wedding Crashers.”

By late Thursday morning, it had received more than 4.6 million views since its YouTube release.
