On Tuesday, June 20, Mattel unveiled 15 new Ken dolls ranging in body types and hairstyles. Buyers can choose from slim, original, or broad body types, as well as seven unique skin tones, not to mention nine different hairstyles — including cornrows and “man buns” — fashion choices vary from business casual to athletic-chic. It’s the latest move from a company struggling to reach sales goals. Last year, Barbie went through a makeover adding tall, curvy, and petite to the list. On average, children play with one Ken doll for every seven Barbies.
