Hard to believe the very first MTV Video Music Awards were in 1983! Nominees for the 2017 VMA’s were announced recently and the “humble,” Kendrick Lamar leads the way with eight nods, while The Weeknd has five, and a slew of other singers including Bruno Mars and DJ Khaled earned four or less. Continuing in the tradition of eliminating gender-specific awards categories, similar to how they presented The 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, there won’t be a Best Male or Best Female Artist this year. Instead, those will be replaced simply with Best Artist. Other nominees include 88.7 The Pulse artists, Alessia Cara, who’s video, “Scars to Your Beautiful,” got three nods for Video of the Year, Best Direction, and Best Fight Against the System, plus performers like Ariana Grande, Calvin Harris, The Chainsmokers, Charlie Puth, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Fall Out Boy, Fifth Harmony, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Halsey, Harry Styles, Imagine Dragons, Katy Perry, Kygo, Kyle, Noah Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Shawn Mendes, Sia, Twenty One Pilots, Zayn, Zedd, and many others.
