The sheriff is back in town! Well, actually he has always been here in Fountain Hills, the former sheriff Joke Arpaio, did I say joke? That must have been a slip. It’s Joe. He plans on running for the US Senate!
Yes, that one guy who has a misdemeanor contempt conviction, oh never mind, that was pardoned by Donald Trump.
Arpaio, who is now a ripe young 85, lost his last bid for sheriff of Maricopa County in November when he was beat by Democrat Paul Penzone in the general election. It was the first time in 24 years Arpaio lost, in case you didn’t know. At the time, he was the longest-serving sheriff in Maricopa County history.
So the self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America, the dude that made prisoners sport pink underwear, yeah he’s running for US senate.
I will say I do love the fact that he loves man’s best friend and fights for animal rights.
Unfortunately, there’s a stack of disconcerting details about his past. In 2007, his agency failed to investigate hundreds of sex crimes against children. In 2008, a federal judge found his jails violated constitutional rights of prisoners. In 2012, he is accused of racially profiling and involved in numerous lawsuits.
The person running against Arpaio is fellow Republican Kelly Ward for the seat left vacant after Senator Jeff Flake announced his retirement Oct 24th 2017. Ward attended Duke University and was elected in 2012 to serve in the Arizona State Senate representing the fifth legislative district. She was unopposed for re-election in 2014.
Currently, there are 8 others running for the open seat in US senate including Krysten Sinema. At the time of her announcement, Sinema released a statement explaining that she’s hoping to be an advocate for everyone.
