It’s time for our dumb criminal of the day award!
The owner of an illegal day care center in Oregon, who was arrested for ditching seven small children under five to go to a tanning salon, has pleaded guilty and is now facing a stiff prison sentence.
The 32 year old woman named January Neatherlin pleaded guilty to 11 counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment and one count of third-degree assault.
She had been facing a total of 122 charges, but the remainder were dropped as a part of the plea agreement. Prosecutors are recommending a 35-year prison sentence for Neatherlin, who was arrested in March after cops found the kids drugged and abandoned at her illegal Little Giggles Daycare in Bend, Oregon.
Police alleged that she left the children alone eight times over 12 days after parents dropped them off.
Neatherlin left the house for roughly two hours at a time and “went to the gym and tanning salon,” prosecutors said.
The moral of the story is be aware of who is in charge of your kids when you’re not there.
Care.com offers some tips for parents to ensure their children’s safety. One thing is to ask about the center’s group size and caregiver-to-child ratio. Also, drop in to volunteer from time-to-time to check out how things are managed. Parents should also ask to see copies of the staff’s first aid and CPR cards. Ask where medicines and cleaning products are stored and if they are locked.
