Harry Styles In Serious Talks To Play Prince Eric in the Live-Action ‘Little Mermaid’ Movie

The One Direction star is the frontrunner to land Prince Eric in the new live-action depiction of 'The Little Mermaid'

We’re out to discover (Prince Eric for the new live-action Little Mermaid)!

It was reported this past weekend that Austin Butler was selected by director Baz Luhrmann to step into the king of rock’s blue suede shoes and play Elvis in the upcoming movie about him.

In the same announcement, it was reported that former One Direction heart-throb Harry Styles was also considered for the role.

Even though he didn’t land the job, they always say that when one door closes, another one opens…

So far, in the new live-action Little Mermaid flick, Melissa McCarthy has been selected to play Ursula, and Halle Bailey has been chosen for the role of Ariel. There is still one large void in the cast that needs to be filled, and that’s for the role of Prince Eric. Styles has been in negotiations to be that guy.

Prince Eric is the human that Ariel falls in love with. It is him that makes Ariel want to make a deal with Ursula to exchange her voice, for a pair of human legs so that she can spend the rest of her life with her prince. Literally. It’s one of Disney’s classic love stories.

The film, being directed by Rob Marshall, has been on a casting spree as of late. In addition to Ursula and Ariel, Jacob Tremblay is in line to play Flounder, and Awkwafina from ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ has been chosen to play Scuttle.

Original music for the new movie will be a collaboration between the original composer from the 1989 version, Alan Menken and Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Interesting to note: Prince Eric didn’t have any singing lines in the original Little Mermaid movie. It was reported by Hollywood Reporter however, that new songs may include duets with Ariel and Eric, as well as solos.

So far, Harry’s first real appearance in a feature film was in the movie Dunkirk, where he played Alex. More recently, he wrote a song featured in Love, Simon, so this will be the British singer’s first big role in a feature film.
