Is it possible to microwave a turkey for Thanksgiving?

It started out as a viral prank and Butterball responded. The question is … Can you actually microwave a Thanksgiving turkey?

Moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas, I have to apologize in advance for this mind blowing information.

It began as a millennial joke #25lbTurkeyChallenge and there is some truth to it.

Famous for their turkey talk line, 1-800-BUTTERBALL, answers all your Thanksgiving Day turkey questions including whether or not you can microwave a turkey. The answer is YES!

It’s a seven step process.

First, thaw the turkey. Never put a frozen one in the microwave! When it’s ready, put it breast side down on a microwave safe dish or plate.

Next, comes the important part. You’ll want to microwave the turkey 4 minutes per pound on full power.

After that, remove the drippings and baste the partially cooked turkey so it begins to get that golden brown skin.

Next important part, flip the turkey over and cook it at 50 percent power for 8 minutes per pound. Check the turkey’s temperature every 18 minutes with a meat thermometer. When it’s 180 to 185 degrees it’s ready to eat! Baste the turkey once more before serving.

By the way, 1-800-BUTTERBALL handles over 100,000 questions every year, so there’s a good chance the expert on the other end of the line will have a solution to any last-minute query.
