Diamondbacks Weekly Recap – Opening Weekend

The Diamondbacks opened the 2019 campaign on Thursday in Los Angeles and managed to win only one of four games. This series gave a great insight for what is to come with a relatively weak team in a competitive division. Here’s a recap of the first week.

Game 1: Diamondbacks 5 – 12 Dodgers

WP: Hyun-Jin Ryu (1-0) 6.0 IP, 4 H, ER, 8 K

LP: Zack Greinke (0-1) 3.2 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Arizona Notables:

Adam Jones (CF) 2-4, HR (1), RBI, R

Christian Walker (1B) 2-4, HR (1), RBI, 2 R

Los Angeles Notables:

Joc Pederson (LF) 3-5, 2 HR (1,2), 4 RBI, 3 R

Enrique Hernandez (2B) 2-3, 2 HR (1,2), 3 RBI, 3 R, BB

Opening Day was a mess from the start. The D-Backs bats were stunned by Ryu’s pitching and Greinke was beaten up, surrendering seven runs in less than four innings of work. Koch came in and performed better than Zack, just not a good as we wished, giving more souvenirs to the sold out crowd. Eight Opening Day home runs were crushed by the Dodgers, a record that will surely never be forgotten by the Diamondbacks.

Game 2: Diamondbacks 5 – 4 Dodgers (F/13)

WP: Matt Andriese (1-0) 2.1 IP, 4 BB

LP: Yimi García (0-1)

S: Greg Holland (1) 1.0 IP, 2 K

Arizona Notables:

Christian Walker (PH) 1-1, HR (2), 3 RBI

David Peralta (LF) 3-6, 2B, R

Carson Kelly (PH) 1-1, 2B, RBI

Los Angeles Notables:

A.J. Pollock (CF) 4-6, HR (1), 3 RBI, 2 R, 2B

Russell Martin (C) 1-3, R, 3 BB

After a horrific first game, the Diamondbacks pulled off a marathon win after six hours. In the top of the 13th, Carson Kelly managed to bloop a RBI double to give Arizona a 5-4 lead and Greg Holland sealed the deal. Robbie Ray looked way more comfortable than Greinke did, striking out nine batters in five innings, but did give up a home run to former D-Backs Outfielder A.J. Pollock as well as three earned runs. Nevertheless, is was a good team win

Game 3: Diamondbacks 5 – 18 Dodgers

WP: Kenta Maeda (1-0) 6.2 IP,  5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K

LP: Zack Godley (0-1) 5.1 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Arizona Notables:

Jarrod Dyson (CF) 2-4, HR (1), RBI, 2 R

Adam Jones (RF) 2-4, HR (2), RBI, R

Los Angeles Notables:

Cody Bellinger (RF) 4-6, 2 HR (2,3), 6 RBI, 2 R

Justin Turner (3B) 3-5, 5 RBI, 3 R, BB

Another Starting Pitcher named Zack on the mound for Arizona and another blowout. Godley was able to survive a couple more innings than Greinke, but performed just as bad. However, there was an even more terrible pitching outing by a player. The Catcher John Ryan Murphy was put in the seventh and eighth innings and gave up another seven earned runs. This was Bellinger’s breakout game on offense and everything he hit was gold. Early runs put up by the D-Backs were never going to be enough to stay in the game with the Dodgers.

Game 4: Diamondbacks 7 – 8 Dodgers

WP: Dylan Floro (1-0) 1.0 IP, 2 H

LP: Yoshihisa Hirano (0-1) 1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, ER, 2 K

S: Kenley Jansen (1) 1.0 IP, K

Arizona Notables:

Luke Weaver (SP) 1-2, HR (1), 2 RBI

Ketel Marte (CF-2B) 2-4, 3B, 2 RBI, R

Los Angeles Notables:

Cody Bellinger (1B) 3-5, HR (4), RBI, 3 R

A.J. Pollock (CF) 2-5, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R

This series ended the same way 2018 ended. The offense was able to surge in the middle of the game, including a two-run homer from the Pitcher, but the team blew the lead and dropped to 1-3 on the season. A fielding error by Adam Jones allowed Bellinger to score the tying run and advance Pollock to third. Max Muncy hit a sacrifice fly ball, giving L.A. the lead and Jansen closed the door. A disappointing loss for the D-Backs.
